Hamidiye Vocational and Technical High School which is among the R&D centers of the Ministry of National Education and which was founded in 1891 by Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid the Second has been educating agriculturalists in an effort to assist the development of Turkish agriculture.

As a result of the research and development activities, it became clear that the agricultural land belonging to the high school was suitable for the production of purple potatoes and school students and teachers planted purple potato seeds on the 30 acres of land.

School Principle Ali Cihan stated that the R&D center at the school has been researching the purple potato which is rich in carbohydrates, minerals and vitamin and soil analysis and feasibility studies revealed that their land is suitable for purple potato production.

"We have seen that our soil is suitable for planting purple potatoes and we will manage to obtain a high quality product. We have decided to produce purple potatoes that originated from South America. It was hard to find the seeds for this valuable product. We planted two different varieties of seeds. We are expecting to harvest 60 tons of purple potatoes. There is a high demand in the chain markets for this product."

"We are cooperating with other schools that have agricultural lands"
Stressing that one of the goals of the project is to encourage students for entrepreneurship, Cihan said, "We are working on many other projects in our R&D centers. Within this framework, we are cooperating with other schools that also have agricultural lands. In our school which was founded 130 years ago by Sultan Abdülhamid Han, we are aiming at blending modern agriculture with traditional agriculture and becoming a pioneer in local and national production."

Meanwhile, Agriculture Department Chief of the School Sabiha Güler Yamaç stated that they have seen that purple potatoes are rich in zinc, folic acid, Vitamin C and D complex and fiber and their carbohydrate values are high as a result of the studşies conducted at the school.

Noting that they are expecting high yield from the product, Yamaç added, "Our teachers and students cooperated and played an active role in the project. We are aiming at increasing the professional knowledge and skills of our students and helping them achieve their goals after their graduation. Another purpose of the project is to contribute to our country's economy."
